Introduction to Lego Mindstorms EV3

Lego Mindstorms EV3 (evolution 3) is the third generation robotics kit in Lego’s Mindstorms line.he biggest change from the predecessor “Lego Mindstorms NXT and NXT 2.0” to the EV3 is the technological advances in the programmable brick. he main processor of the NXT was an ARM7 microcontroller, whereas the EV3 has a more powerful ARM9 CPU running Linux. A USB connector and Micro SD slot (up to 32GB) are new to the EV3. It comes with the plans to build 5 different robots: EV3RSTORM, GRIPP3R, R3PTAR, SPIK3R, and TRACK3R.Lego has also released instructions online to build 12 additional projects: ROBODOZ3R, BANNER PRINT3R, EV3MEG, BOBB3E, MR-B3AM, RAC3 TRUCK, KRAZ3, EV3D4, EL3CTRIC GUITAR, DINOR3X, WACK3M, and EV3GAME.It uses a program called Lego Mindstorms EV3 Home Edition, which is powered by LabVIEW, to write code using blocks instead of lines. However it can also be programmed on the actual robot and saved.
The following points explain key elements of our robot physical design:

  • There are 4 motors used- One for the forward and background movement of the robot, tw for the left and right side movements and the last one for the chain up and down. The large motor has a built in rotation sensor with 1-degree resolution for precision control. By using the move steering or move tank programming block, the motors will coordinate action simultaneously. The medium sized motors are lighter than the former ones and thus can respond quickly and every aspect of it can be programmed and controlled. The scanning process is based on using the ultrasonic sensor to scan the area in front of the robot vertically to determine the object
presence. We have set a threshold value for both the chain up and chain down movements so that there is an upper and lower limits to restrict the scanning.
  • A differential steering mechanism is used for the robot wheels which acts the base for our kicker.A differential is called so because it can drive wheels at different speeds. The wwo wheels are on separate axles and supported by frame so that they can move freely at different speeds. A spoke is attached to each wheel so as to make their movements independent and then there is a bar combining the two spokes. This constitution enables us to kick the ball with a flawless force without the need of any additional motors.
